Hoshiarpur, nestled in the northeastern region of Punjab, has a rich historical heritage dating back to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. Legend has it that numerous sites in the district are associated with the Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata. Within the Shivalik range, archaeologists have unearthed stone-age tools at 16 different locations. By the 10th century A.D., the Shivalik areas fell under the dominion of the Pratiharas, fostering the development of local tribal arts. In 965 A.D., Jaipal ascended to power, introducing the Hindu-Shahi architectural style to the Dholbaha valley. The Parmara rulers reigned from 988 to 1260 A.D. Raja Shankar Dass purportedly erected a fort in what is now Garhshankar before 1174 A.D., later seized by Mahmud Ghazni. Subsequently, the district witnessed intermittent invasions by Muslim rulers. From the 19th century onwards, it was governed by Sikh rulers before falling under British rule until 1947.
The district enjoys a moderate climate owing to its hilly terrain and substantial forest cover. The implementation of the Kandi Watershed Development Project has augmented water resources, making summers pleasantly mild. The district experiences three main seasons: summer (April to June), monsoon (July to September), and winter (October to March). May and June are the hottest months, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. Winters, particularly from December to February, can be severe, with temperatures dropping to around 5 degrees Celsius and occasionally touching zero.
